2024 in rhyming couplets

A new year dawns, another day

For Sadiq’s hubris to hold sway.

We mourned the passing of England’s Queen

For 70 years she reigned supreme

Last year was gruesome, even mean,

Now gone and just another meme.

The coming time is not attractive

With guns and rockets fully active.

One scarcely hopes that peace can reign

In world bedevilled with leaders vain.

But let us ponder for a while

How much remains that is not vile.

The Sun still shines, the world is green

Despite dissenting prophet’s spleen,

Life abounds in awesome might

And days will grow to spite the night

We’ll stagger on towards our doom

But still some things defy the gloom.

A leafy oak, a tinkling stream

Allow us still to keep our dream.

Politicians take us down

Beneath imperious, petulant frown

But they are fleeting e’en at their best

In truth, they never pass the test

Of competence and honesty

The people don’t speak well of thee.

Despite their sad attempts to rule

We ever know they play the fool.

Democracy has had its day

And stark oppression seeks to stay.

But we, the people, won’t be cowed

By demagogues, however loud.

We spurn their views, their subtle fog

As we would spurn a rabid dog.

The writing’s there upon the wall,

We shall prevail and they shall fall.

The time is coming, we shall see

When siren calls of liberty

Reject oppression, ‘t’will never do,

We are many, they are few.

Now, politicians we surmise

Are short on truth and big on lies.

Pontification is their art

But actions they will never start.

Prevarication every time,

Activity a dreadful crime.

When politics is just a joke,

What hope is there for simple folk?

Carpe diem is the call,

Remove the shysters, one and all.

It can be done, it will be done,

Could even be a lot of fun.

To see politicos suffering hell

Would be cathartic, fun as well.

Too long has greed defined our shore

Quoth the Raven, nevermore.

Then can joys remain extant,

Without the necessary pant,

For sunny dreams and joy unbound.

We know, with effort, they’ll still be found.

A country lane, a cheerful walk,

Avoid the chattering classes talk.

The country can arise again,

Without the politicians’ bane,

If we awake and do our bit

They shall not hear the last of it.

It can be done, it will be done

And we can rediscover fun.

Arise then people, regain your land,

It can be done by your fair hand.

Begone the tyrants villainy,

We can and will be ever free.

Libertas, Justitia, Veritas.
